Switzerland is a country which, for any self-respecting traveller, is not just short of a visit, it is obscenely short. It is a country where every town and city, even the smallest one, breathes history. And just every Swiss city is stunningly beautiful in architectural terms, and very harmoniously blended with the beautiful nature of this Alpine country.
It’s often described as ‘the most beautiful city in Switzerland’, though this is a matter of taste. However, you can’t help but notice that Lucerne is a city of beautiful architecture.
Its main and by no means only one point of interest is the 14th century covered wooden bridge spanning the Reiss River.
This city is considered one of the most beautiful not only in Switzerland, but in the whole Europe. Its architecture is a surprisingly harmonious blend of ancient buildings (the oldest dating back to the 13th century) and masterpieces of modern urban planning. In addition, the city is perfectly integrated into the beautiful Alpine landscape.
This city in the northeast of the country even resembles a village, so small is it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the trip. It is.
Stein am Rhein is a city of fascinating old architecture whose “highlight” is the decoration of the buildings. Almost every building in the city is a small masterpiece. And at Christmas, the town becomes a truly magical place.
This town is also very small, but it also boasts ancient and very original architecture. The biggest building in the town is the castle which astounds you with its fairytale look. The city itself has a rather unusual conception. Most of the streets in Thun are two-storey – the roofs of the buildings on the lower tier are at the same time… pavements.
The Swiss capital is worth a visit not only because of its status. Bern is a city with majestic and very interesting architecture, a UNESCO World Heritage City. And in the warmer months the architectural splendour of the Swiss capital is enhanced by an abundance of greenery and many fountains.
Located in the French-speaking part of the country this town is tiny in size but very famous. One of the best Swiss cheeses is made here and the castle is one of the most visited attractions. The city is also very popular for its museum, which houses a collection of works by Hans Giger, one of the iconic contemporary artists to whom we owe the image of the “outsider”.
The town is not known for its architectural or historical landmarks or for the fact that famous people have lived there. But Appenzell is worth a visit for its unique Swiss flavour. The city is the capital of a canton. Its way of life has remained unchanged for centuries. In particular, to this day many important issues are still decided by a vote of the inhabitants at a public meeting in the town square.
